別の・ほかの表し方
要点another / other / the other
文法の形
「別の・他の」を表す形です。単数か複数か、どれを指すか特定できるか、名詞を後ろに置くかで選びます。another cup / other books のように名詞を続ける形は後ろの名詞を説明し、another / others のように単独で使う形は名詞の代わりになる代名詞として働きます。another は an + other が1語になった形です。
another cup は「もう1つのカップ」。I'll buy another. は「もう1つ買います」。another two cups なら「さらに2つ」です。
other books は「他の本」、other information は「他の情報」。my other bag のように、my などと一緒なら単数名詞も続けられます。
Be kind to others. は「他の人に親切にしましょう」。others の後ろに名詞は置きません。不可算名詞の代わりにも使いません。
I have two pens. One is red, and the other is blue.「ペンが2本あります。1本は赤で、もう1本は青です」。名詞を続ける the other pens なら複数を指します。
There are three books. One is mine, and the others are yours.「本が3冊あります。1冊は私ので、残りはあなたのです」。残り2冊全部を指します。
使い分け
どの範囲を指すかで選ぶ
特定の残り全部を指すなら the を付けます。元の集団が3つ以上でも、残りが1つなら the other です。
もう1つ・別の1つ — Can I have another cup?「もう1つカップをもらえますか？」。複数なら Can I have other cups?「別のカップを何個かもらえますか？」のように other + 複数名詞を使います。
other / others他の人・もの。残り全部とは限らない — other books / others
the other単独なら特定の残り1つ — I have three pens. Two are red, and the other is blue.「3本のうち2本は赤で、残りの1本は青です」。the other books と名詞も続けられます。
the others特定の残り全部を複数で指す — the others are yours
others と the others を同じ場面で比べる
生徒が5人いて、1人が読書をしている場面で比べます。
One is reading, and others are talking.「1人は読書をしていて、ほかには話をしている人たちがいます」。残り4人全員が話しているかまでは述べていません。
the others：残り全員One is reading, and the others are talking.「1人は読書をしていて、残りの全員は話をしています」。残り4人全員を指します。集団が分かっているだけでなく、その残り全部を指すかで選びます。
文法のルール
「もう1つ」の another に名詞を直接続けるときは単数形。

「もう1つのカップ」なら another の直後は単数の cup です。another cups とはしません。ただし another two cups のように数を挟むと「さらに2つ」を表せます。
名詞を後ろに置くときは other。others books とはしない。
I have others books at home.
I have other books at home.
名詞 books を後ろに置くときは other books です。others は名詞を伴わずに複数の人・ものを指す形なので、others books とはしません。

Be kind to others.
ここでは名詞を置かずに「他の人たち」を複数で指すので others を使います。名詞を続けるなら Be kind to other people. と言えます。
the other の後ろが複数名詞なら動詞も複数に合わせる。
The other pens is blue.
The other pens are blue.
the other の後ろに複数名詞 pens が続いているので、動詞は are です。名詞を省く場合は The others are blue. と言えます。
