説明
another / other / the other / others は、「別の・他の」を指す範囲に応じて使い分けます。
「もう1杯ください」「他の人たちは賛成だ」「片方は赤、もう一方は青」のように、すでに話に出たもの以外を指すときに使います。
数え方に加えて、どの人・ものか特定できるか、名詞を後ろに置くかを確認します。other books と others の違いは、名詞 books を続けるかどうかです。
another cup は「もう1杯・別の1杯」、another two cups は「さらに2杯」です。まず1つを指す基本の形から覚えます。

another の使い方
another で「もう1つの／別の」が言えるようになる
another は「もう1つの・別の1つの」を表します。 名詞をすぐ後ろに続ける基本の形は another + 単数の可算名詞です。指すものが分かれば、名詞を省いて another だけでも使えます。
another は an + other が1語になった形です。an が含まれていると考えると、 another cup のように単数の可算名詞を直接続ける基本の形を覚えやすくなります。 another cup の another は後ろの名詞 cup を説明します。 名詞を省いて単独で使う another は、名詞の代わりになる代名詞の働きをします。

「もう1つのカップ」なら another の直後は単数の cup です。another cups とはしません。ただし another two cups のように数を挟むと「さらに2つ」を表せます。
「このケーキはおいしいです。同じ種類をもう1つ追加で買います」の英語はどうなりますか。
other と others
other / others で「他の〜」が言えるようになる
other + 複数名詞 は「他の人・もの」を表します。 名詞を置かずに複数で指す形が others です。 other は other information のように不可算名詞にも使えますが、 others は不可算名詞の代わりには使いません。
other people の other は後ろの名詞を説明する働き、others は名詞の代わりになる代名詞です。 たとえば Be kind to other people. と Be kind to others. は、 どちらも「他の人に親切にしましょう」という意味になります。 some ..., others ... は「〜する人もいれば、別の人たちは〜する」と対比するときの基本形です。
例文
Some people like dogs; other people like cats.

名詞 books を後ろに置くときは other books です。others は名詞を伴わずに複数の人・ものを指す形なので、others books とはしません。

ここでは名詞を置かずに「他の人たち」を複数で指すので others を使います。名詞を続けるなら Be kind to other people. と言えます。

the other と the others
one ... the other / the others で特定の「もう一方・残り全部」が言えるようになる
特定の集団のうち、残りをまとめて指すときは theを付けます。名詞を置かずに残り1つを指すなら the other、 残り2つ以上なら the others です。 元の集団の数ではなく、今指す残りの数に合わせます。
名詞を続けるときは the other book / the other books のように、 other に -s を付けません。the other books と the others は、 本を指すと分かる場面で同じ残りの本を表せます。

the other の後ろに複数名詞 pens が続いているので、動詞は are です。名詞を省く場合は The others are blue. と言えます。

まず名詞を続けるかを確認し、数え方と指す範囲を見ます。 複数の others と the others の違いは、特定の残り全部を指すかどうかです。 集団が分かっていても、その一部を「他の人々」と指すだけなら others を使えます。
