文法の意味
whether or notを使うと、そうなる場合とならない場合の両方を明示できる
『〜かどうか』という疑問の中身と、『〜であってもなくても』結果は同じだという譲歩の2つを表せます。
使い方・使い分け
2つの可能性を検討するか、どちらでも結果が同じだと述べる
同じwhether or notでも、文の中で名詞の働きをする場合と、条件に左右されないことを表す場合があります。
- 〜かどうか
- I don't know whether or not he will come.「彼が来るかどうか分かりません」
- 〜であってもなくても
- Whether or not it rains, we will have the picnic.「雨でも雨でなくてもピクニックをします」
- 強調しない形
- whetherだけでも『〜かどうか』を表せる。or notで両方の可能性を明示する
ifと入れ替えられない位置ではwhetherを使う
通常の目的語ではifを使えることもありますが、whetherだけが使える形があります。
- or notを直後に置く
- whether or not he comes
- to不定詞を続ける
- I can't decide whether to stay or leave.「残るか帰るか決められません」
- 前置詞の後ろ
- We talked about whether we should change the plan.
- ifを使う場合
- I don't know if he will come or not. — or notを文の後ろに置ける
文法の形
or notをwhetherの直後に置く形と、文の後ろへ置く形があります。
whether or not + 主語 + 動詞

文法のルール
or notを接続語の直後に置くならwhether or notを使い、if or notにはしない。
補足：ifを使う場合はif he will come or notのように、or notを文の後ろへ置きます。
よくある間違い
I don't know if or not he will come.
基本の形
I don't know whether or not he will come.
「〜かどうか」に or not を続けられるのは whether だけです。if or not の形にはしません。
if を使う場合は、I don't know if he will come or not. のように or not を文の後ろに置きます。
